Chris Evdemon, GM of Incubation Programs at InnovationWorks, has updated his excellent presentation on China’s Early Stage Ecosystem. It’s a must-read to understand China’s trends, technologies, financing, and InnovationWorks itself.

My three favorite slides:

  1. [slide 28] The digital divide of users into 3 groups: 1) 3-low users (blue-collar, military, migrant workers); 2) aspiring, young, white-collar students; and 3) High-end white collars
  2. [slide 30] What do young early adopters want? None of the top 10 desired apps are the same as the top 5 Android apps (web search, email, browser, maps, YouTube)
  3. [slide 31] Strategic projects for mobile internet – China’s mobile internet will develop as China’s internet has: from basic apps, to entertainment, to advanced apps.

In 1.5 short years, InnovationWorks has taken on 26 projects, largely betting on the trends in this presentation: 14 incubation, 8 angel round, and 4 series A. [slide 41 & 43]

Great slides but surely a little bit iffy to recommend a Rep Office as a means of investing in China – an RO is exactly that, it can do no business (sales) at all.
